Fatalities/Near Fatalities from Suspected Child Abuse

Measurement Period: 2022
Number of fatalities and near-fatalities from suspected child abuse in Allegheny County. A near-fatality is defined as a critical incident where a child's condition is 'serious' or 'critical', as certified by a physician.
Data was collected from the Allegheny County Key Information and Demographics System (KIDS), a welfare case management data system that includes details about individual demographics, case activity, services received, family plans, and assessments. View the Allegheny County Department of Human Services (ACDHS) Dashboard for Child Fatalities and Near Fatalities for more information.

Why is this important?

Under Act 33 of Pennsylvania's Child Protective Services Law requires review of child fatalities and near-fatalities when abuse is suspected, at both the county and state levels. Since 2008 when the review process began, the number of child abuse cases has increased in Allegheny County, with 2022 being the highest year on record. Tracking the details of child abuse cases is important for determining how much CYF involvement is needed.
