Why is this important?

Social factors that affect a community's health may also significantly affect their resilience in the event of a public health emergency or disaster. Social vulnerability refers to a community's inability to sufficiently prepare for, mitigate, and recover after disasters. This indicator uses 16 census variables to help local public health officials identify vulnerable populations and communities most in need of support and quickly establish priorities during an emergency.
