Children with Type 1 Diabetes

This indicator shows the percentage of students (grades K- 12) diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Why is this important?

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and adolescents. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 208,000 people under 20 years of age have diabetes. When diabetes is diagnosed during childhood, it is routinely assumed to be type 1, however over the past 20 years, type 2 diabetes among children has been on the rise. Type 1 diabetes, also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes, results when the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin. Individuals with type 1 diabetes must use an insulin pump or receive insulin injections to control their daily blood glucose levels. Over 18,000 young people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes each year (ADA).
