Children with Type 2 Diabetes

County: Allegheny
Measurement Period: 2017-2018
This indicator shows the percentage of students (grades K- 12) diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Why is this important?

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and adolescents. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 208,000 people under 20 years of age have diabetes. When diabetes occurs during childhood, it is routinely assumed to be type 1, however over the past 20 years, type 2 diabetes among children has been on the rise. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body in not able to respond to insulin normally. The pancreas gradually loses its ability to produce sufficient amounts of insulin to regulate blood sugar. Unlike individuals with type 1 diabetes, most people with type 2 diabetes can still produce insulin, but not enough to satisfy the amount their body needs. Obesity, low levels of physical activity, and exposure to diabetes in utero, may be major contributors to the increase in type 2 diabetes during childhood and adolescence. Children and adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are generally between 10 and 19 years old, obese, have a strong family history for type 2 diabetes, and have insulin resistance.
