Rent-Burdened Households (5-year)

Select a Census Place (City)
Measurement Period: 2018-2022
This indicator shows the percentage of renters who are spending 30% or more of their household income on rent. Rental costs are comprised of rent and utilities (electricity, gas, other fuels, water and sewer).

Numerator = Total estimate of renters who are spending 30% or more of their household income on rent
Denominator = Total estimate of renters with household income and rent spending determined

Why is this important?

Gross rent as a percentage of household income provides information on the monthly housing cost expenses for renters in Allegheny County. The information offers an excellent measure of housing affordability and excessive shelter costs. The data also serve to aid in the development of housing programs to meet the needs of people at different economic levels and to provide assistance to agencies in determining policies on fair rent. ACHD is working to support policies that reduce the number of blighted and abandoned properties and increase the availability of affordable and safe housing.
